Meet Your Farmers for June 2009

Southport Seafood Company

Southport Seafood Company was recently established by Mary, Jason & Holden Stegall and Capt. Bill Hickman. Our mission is to build upon the traditional ways of catching fresh seafood and distribute only the finest quality catch.

Hickman has over 45 years experience and captains the custom built 36' Harkers Island vessel named Sea Eagle. This boat has recently been outfitted for off-shore commercial fishing. Our target species are King Mackerel, Snapper, Grouper, Grunts, Beeliners, Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, Cobia and more. Since our boat is smaller than most commercial vessels, our trips are much shorter primarily due to fuel capacity. In return our fish is much fresher.

The larger commercial vessels that dominate most of the wholesale business spend 20 days or more at sea and then an additional 5-10 days shipping the seafood to retail stores where it's finally consumed. Therefore in most cases, the fish you enjoy at fine restaurants is almost 30 days old. Southport Seafood Company strives to keep the catch to consumption time to less than 5 days!

Our high tech communication system from ship to shore allows us to be notified immediately when the fish are caught. We then can contact our select wholesale buyers and schedule immediate pick up or delivery when the boat arrives to the dock.

Chapel Hill Creamery

Chapel Hill Creamery is a small dairy farm and farmstead cheesemaking facility. We chose Jersey cows for their rich milk, which makes great cheese. Our cows spend their time on pasture, and we've established an intensive rotational grazing system to ensure that they'll have access to high quality grass during their milking season. We milk and make cheese from March through December, when our pasture, and therefore our milk, are best.

Homestead Harvest Farm is a small family farm providing exceptional heritage breed chickens and turkeys for meat as well as eggs. Their birds are pasture-raised on pesticide-free grass without any antibiotics. Their laying hens are free-ranging, returning at night to roost in moveable "chicken tractors".

They use sustainable practices to rotate the birds throughout the fields...fertilizing as they go. We have met all the criteria for the Animal Welfare Approved certification and are awaiting final approval. Homestead Harvest Farm do all the processing on-site and compost the remains.

Farmers we've partnered with in the past

Celebrity Dairy

Following time-honored French farmstead techniques, we transform their milk into fresh goat cheese, or chèvre. Its taste is inextricably tied to its place of origin - our particular herd of Alpine and Saanen goats, their forage unique to our farm's pasture and woods, the Piedmont's gentle seasons, and our evolving skill in transforming the continuously changing milk into a delicate fresh chèvre. Simply put, Celebrity Dairy chèvre is an honest expression of ourselves, and our farm, and our place in time - our "terroir".

The Popes first came to Orange County, NC in October 1754 when Thomas Pope received a Land Grant from Lord Granville. The present Captain John S. Pope Farm, although not a part of that grant, has been continuously owned since 1852 by the descendants of John S. and Mary Jane McDade Pope. This farm was acquired from Mary Jane’s father, John A. McDade, and is currently operated by the 4th, 5th and 6th generations. Throughout the years, the Popes have farmed these rolling hills, producing a variety of food products including chickens, pigs, beef and milk cows, and apples and berries. The turn to Dorper sheep came about as a result of America’s changing diet and a desire for lower fat meats. All of our Dorpers are free-range, grass and well water fed, antibiotic-free, with no added hormones.
